AI in Education: Are we teaching the right skills?

As schools across the country begin integrating AI into classrooms, an important question is emerging: What should students actually learn about AI?

A recent Washington Post opinion article argues that many schools are focusing too narrowly on teaching students how to use AI tools, things like writing prompts for chatbots. But the authors suggest that a more meaningful approach is helping students understand how AI works, the data and algorithms behind it, and its broader impact on society and learning.

The goal isn’t just proficiency with tools, but helping students develop the judgment to know when AI can enhance learning and when it might hinder it.
